Natural stone tiles are becoming increasingly popular in all settings, and the choice of design options is greater than ever. These ‘mountain-born’ materials are used on floors and walls, and also to create other surfaces, like kitchen counters and vanity units. They bring with them an organic, tactile feel and a host of unique natural characteristics – be it a scattering of fossils or a striking mix of colour tones. Expensive artificial tiles also available now a days to give tough competitions to natural stones and bit easier to maintenance too but not fully maintenance-free.

Cleaning

The tile or stone cleaning process can be broken down into two specific areas: the initial clean of a new installation and the on-going maintenance of an existing surface. An initial clean removes debris from factory finishing processes and installation dirt, while on-going maintenance tackles the problem of build-up of cleaning chemical residues, everyday dirt and grime, and atmospheric agents. A periodic deep clean may also be required in some installations

Sealing

Stone or tiles can be sealed in a variety of ways, to provide performance and aesthetic benefits. Treatments come in many forms and there are water-based sealers and solvent-based products; the correct choice of sealant is crucial to the overall performance and life-cycle of the treatment. Generally, a ‘sealer’ is a topical application that adds a coating to the surface of the tile or stone. It protects against water, oil or other contaminants. An ‘impregnator’ penetrates below the surface and acts like a repellent. Some sealers also enhance colour and it is called natural colour enhancer

Ongoing maintenance

Once a correctly cleaned tile or stone has been sealed, it is important to make sure that the correct ongoing maintenance is carried out. This will ensure that the full life-cycle benefits are achieved and that the tile’s aesthetics are maintained.
